How to Get Your Mortgage License in New York
1. Complete Your Pre-Licensing Education
Create your NMLS account and complete your NMLS-approved education. New York requires three hours on New York mortgage law as part of your coursework.
2. Schedule and Pass the SAFE MLO Test
Enroll in the SAFE MLO Test through NMLS when you’re ready. A score of 75% or higher clears this step.
3. Apply for Your License
Send your MU4 application to the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) through NMLS, then pay the state and NMLS fees.
4. Complete Your Background Check
After you file, schedule your fingerprints through NMLS for the FBI background check. DFS reviews the results with your credit report.
5. Start Your Mortgage Career
Once your employer sponsors you in NMLS, your license goes active, and you can start originating loans across the state.
